In memory of Veniamin, Metropolitan of Petrograd
The Oratorio by the St.Petersburg composer Mikhail Malevich "The Martyr as on Golgotha" is dedicated to the Holy Martyr Veniamin Mitropolit of Petrograd and suffered with him Archimandrit Sergius (Shein), lawyers Ivan Kovsharov, Yuri Novitsky and all the new martyrs of the Russian Church. It reveals a picture of God-fighting period in Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Îratorio was first performed on August 13, 2022, on the day of the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of the saints and in the place where they were put on the unjust trial - in the Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
The core of the Oratorio is the letter of the will that the Holy Martyr Veniamin wrote a few days before the execution. The letter is like the apostolic epistles, it is visible evidence of faithfulness to Christ, even until death. As part of the oratorio, the letter is surrounded by passages from the Holy Scripture and several sources. Together they give a picture of the dramatic events of a century ago and spiritual understanding of them and interpretation in WORDS and MUSIC. The Oratorio lasts 45 minutes — that is how long the reading of the verdict of the Revolutionary tribunal continued in this hall.
On August 13, this year, the Oratorio will be performed for the 3rd time. It will be preceded by the premiere of the diptych "Blessed is He who remembers ..." (Lyapunov-Malevich). The inclusion of S.M.Lyapunov's choral work is not accidental; the author worked on it during that very trial. Sergei Lyapunov was in the dock with Mitropolit Veniamin as the Conservatory church warden and escaped the sentence due to his world renown. 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of his death.
