Biography

Was born in 1961 in Saint-Petersburg. At the age of 12 he began to study the clarinet and in 1976 young Alexei entered the Rimsky-Korsakov Musical College of the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory in the clarinet class of Isaak Roginsky. In 1985, after finishing the Conservatory with a first-class honours degree, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the Navy and appointed to lead the Saint Petersburg Admiralty Navy Band, which he has directed to many successes.

The active and fruitful concert work with the Admiralty Navy Band made Alexei Karabanov popular with the often critical Saint Petersburg audience.

In 1991, Alexei Karabanov received his first invitation to perform international concerts with The Admiralty Navy Band. The first tour out of Russia was to the cities of northen France and the Fifth International Festival of Military Music in Lille, where the Band enjoyed a grand success. Since that time the Band, under the leadership of now Commander Karabanov, has appeared regulary on west European stages, at festivals of military music and performed for many large city holidays.

In October 1993 Alexei Karabanov had his first tour abroad as a guest conductor. He was invited to Brigham Young University where he gave classroom lectures and directed the BYU Bands. The previously "unknown" original Russian band music by V. Barsegian and V. Malgin was introduced there. In October 1999, a Russian music program was performed by the HMS Nelson Royal Marines Band at Portsmouth under the baton of Commander Karabanov.

In 2007 by the order of the Ministry of Defense, Maestro Karabanov was appointed Artistic Director and commanding officer of The Central Navy Band of Russia and received promotion to the senior naval rank of Captain ("Kapitan 1-go ranga" in Russian).
