Biography

Maria Eklund is one of the most distinguished conductors of her generation. She is regularly working with most of the leading symphony orchestras and opera houses such as the Bolshoi Theatre, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Philharmonia, Arena di Verona, National Opera of China and Russian National Orchestra as well as Swedish and German orchestras.
She is an artistic leader and conductor of a chamber orchestra “ "Stockholms Solister"”, which she started I Stockholm in 2012 . During the season 2013-2014 she made a tour with Stockholms Solister to Moscow Russia and Växjö in Sweden. The orchestra is currently making a concert series “Our Stockholm “with grants from The City of Stockholm and The Swedish Arts Counsel.

The season 2014 started with New Year Concerts at Berwaldhallen in Stockholm with the Stockholm Strauss Orchestra. In 2013-2014 she was performing with Gävle Symphony Orchestra and Västerås Sinfonietta. In September-November 2015 she will be conducting the new production of La Traviata in Folkopera in Stockholm. In 2015 she will also perform with the Nordiska Chamber Orchestra in Sundsvall Sweden and with St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall.

Between 2005 and 2013 she was performing regular within the Moscow Philharmonic programme “Stars of the 21 Century” and “ Romantic Concerts” , which was highly rewarded by Russian press In 2010 was followed by a tour in Sweden with the Swedish Royal Military Band. In 2010 she made a tour with Stockholm Wind Symphony to the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, and Berwaldhallen in Stockholm. During the years 2005-2008 she has been a Principal Guest Conductor at the Symphony Orchestra of Russia. In October 2010 she will open the new season of the Moscow Philharmonic Society, presenting to the Russian audience for the first time the recognized composer Viktoria Borisova-Ollas with the piece ”Open Ground” .

Among other highlights was her début with the Russian State Symphony Orchestra named by Evgeny Svetlanov, with which she made a major tour in Russia, receiving standing ovations and critic appreciation.

In December 2006 Ms Eklund made a performance with the orchestra, choir and singers of Arena di Verona in Italy, which was much appreciated by Italian critics. As a result she was invited to conduct the Arena di Verona tour to Moscow in October 18-19, 2007 together with singers Paata Burchuladze, Mariella Devia, Vincenco la Scola. During 2006 she also made a nationwide tour in China.

Ms Eklund was educated in Russia at both the Moscow Tchaikovsky conservatory and the Gnesin Academy of Music. 1997-2000 she continued her education at the Royal University College of Music in Stockholm. 2001-2004 she pursued her studies in the Diploma class of the legendary conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. Mrs. Eklund was leader of Stockholm’s virtuosensemble and has regularly worked with Berlin Sinfonietta with whom she made some recordings, which were used by Deutsche Welle in Berlin. Her repertoire is broad and includes both classical music as well as some newly written works. She specially enjoys performing such composers as Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Bartok, Britten, Copland and Gershwin. Mrs. Eklund made recordings of pieces by Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Schedrin, Suk, Piazzolla and Britten with Flower records, ECC Stutenbaumer KG and Melodia.
