Biography

Hans Graf is Principal Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra from July 2020.

Graf's semi-staged production of Bergs Wozzeck with the Houston Symphony, where he was Music Director from 2001 to 2013, longest serving Music Director in the Orchestras history, won international acclaim.

He was also Music Director of the Calgary Philharmonic, the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, the Basque National Orchestra (Euskadi) and the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg. (1984-1994)

His work in the US includes a close and long collaboration with the Boston Symphony, many appearances with the orchestras of Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York, and most of the major orchestras of the US and Canada.

In Europe, Graf conducted the Philharmonic Orchestras of Vienna and London, the Royal Concertgebouw and Leipzig Gewandhaus, frequent concerts with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the DSO Berlin, Bavarian and Stuttgart Radio Orchestras, the Dutch Radio Philharmonic, the LSO, LPO, RPO, the Hallé, Royal Scottish and the Budapest Festival Orchestra and many other leading European orchestras.

He often conduct the Aalborg SO and the South Netherlands PO.

He is also a regular guest with the Sydney and Melbourne Symphonies, the Seoul, Hong Kong and Malaysia PO.

Mr. Graf frequently conducted at the Salzburg Festival since 1983. He participated in several other festivals like Bregenz, Orange, Aix-en-Provence, Maggio Musicale and Savonlinna.

US festival appearances include Tanglewood and Blossom, Aspen, Bravo!Vail, Mostly Mozart, the Texas Music Festival and the Grant Park Music Festival.

Graf led many performances at the Vienna State Opera since 1981, and conducted at the opera houses of Munich, Berlin, Paris and Rome among others.

Recent opera work includes Zurich (Parsifal) and Strasbourg (Boris Godunov).

In 2014 he was awarded the "Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis" for Richard Strauss' "Die Feuersnot" at the Vienna Volksoper where his most recent opera premiere was Rosenkavalier in 2021.

Hans Graf's discography includes all symphonies of Mozart and Schubert, Henri Dutilleux' complete orchestral works, and the world premiere recording of Zemlinsky's "Es war einmal".

       

Among his recordings with the Houston Symphony are a DVD of Holsts "The Planets" ("An HD Odyssey"), and CDs of Bartok's "Wooden Prince", Zemlinsky's "Lyric Symphony" and Mahler's "Lied von der Erde", culminating in the ECHO KLASSIK (2017) and Grammy (2018) winning Wozzeck".

Born in Upper Austria, Graf grew up in a musicians family. He studied conducting in Graz, in Siena with Franco Ferrara, with Sergiu Celibidache in Bologna and in St. Petersburg with Arvid Jansons. (1971/72)

Hans Graf is Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur and was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour of the Republic of Austria.

He is also Professor Emeritus for Orchestral Conducting at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg.
