The world-renowned American violinist, who played as a unique experiment in the subway of Washington, will perform at the “Arts Square” Festival in St. Petersburg

Joshua Bell – American violinist, star of the world classical music - will perform with the Distinguished orchestra of Russia under the baton of People's artist of Russia Nikolay Alexeev at the Grand Philharmonic Hall on December 20. The musician became widely known for his participation in the experiment of Washington Post newspaper devoted to the phenomenon of "art without a frame", during which Bell, one of the best violinists in the world, played the Stradivarius violin for more than 40 minutes in the Washington subway during rush-hour. The musician will perform Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, and Brahms’ Third Symphony in St. Petersburg. The concert is part of the XX International winter "Arts Square" Festival.

Joshua bell became the protagonist of an experiment organized by Washington Post in 2007, when a violinist incognito played the Stradivarius violin for 40 minutes in the Washington subway during rush-hour. The article "Pearls before Breakfast" devoted to the experiment provoked a discussion about the role of context in the process of perception of art and was awarded the Pulitzer prize.

Joshua Bell's career has been developing successfully for more than thirty years, during this time he has performed with almost all major orchestras in the world, proved himself not only as a soloist and chamber performer, but also as a conductor and artistic director. Since 2011, he has led the famous chamber orchestra "Academy of St. Martin in the Fields", this season the musician is preparing to celebrate the 60th anniversary season of the orchestra in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. His repertoire interests are wide – they include recognized masterpieces of academic music and new music: Bell has made world premieres of John Corigliano,  Edgar Meyer, the Persian composer Behzad Ranjbaran works, and many other authors, the performer received the Grammy award for the recording of Nicholas Mau’ Violin Concerto.

The musician collaborates with artists representing a variety of genres, including Renee Fleming, Chick Corea, Regina Spector, Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Sting and many others, to expand the usual sphere of influence of classical music. The artist retains an interest to movie soundtracks: in 2018, the "Red violin" movie, the soundtrack of which contained Joshua Bell’s solo part, turned 20 years old; in the summer of 2018, the musician performed this music at many festivals, with the New York Philharmonic orchestra as well. Joshua Bell - guest on Johnny Carson Tonight show; the hero of one of the Great Performances series – the longest-running television anthology devoted to the performing arts; he repeatedly appeared in the popular series "Mozart in the jungle", dedicated to the New York Philharmonic orchestra’s life. The musician is an exclusive artist of Sony Classical; over 40 of his albums released by this label have been awarded such prestigious awards as Grammy, Mercury, Gramophone, Opus Klassik and others. The violinist has become a hero of children's books and animated movies; he supports projects in which music is one of the most important educational instruments. The performer plays the “Huberman” Stradivarius violin 1713.
