Children's choir of TV and radio of St.Petersburg

About group

The Children’s Choir of TV and Radio of St Petersburg was created in 1955 and was the first children’s choir of the Soviet Union Broadcasting system. The founding fathers of this group were the outstanding musicians, Yuri Slavnitsky and Isaac Dunaevsky.

Over the years the Children’s Choir has become one of St Petersburg true symbols and part of its culture. It has always been part  of various choral and orchestral recitals, theatre performances, official events and even a full-scale choir at the Orthodox Church services.

The young singers are top of the class, and have stunned audiences all over the world, in Russia and Europe, the US and Asia.

Some of the most significant performances done by the Choir include War Requiem and the Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten, cantata Carmina Burana by Karl Orf, the 3d and the 8th Symphonies by Gustav Mahler, to name just a few. These are the works that require highly skilled musicians to perform.

The Children’s Choir of TV and Radio of St Petersburg is the permanent part of the troupe for some of the performances at the Mariinsky theatre, as well as being part of its recitals repertoire. To mention the most recent ones, the choir took part in the vanguard opera “The True Story of Cinderella” by Vladimir Tarnopolsky and “The Queen of Spades” by Piotr Tchaikovsky in the brilliant interpretation by Director Alexey Stepaniuk.

The young musicians enjoy singing in virtually any genre, from Russian sacred works to Russian rock music, from Western-European classical pieces to modern pop-music, from classical operas to contemporary performances.

The history of the Children’s choir of TV and Radio of St.Petersburg began in 1955. The group was to record music for radio and television programs. Today in the “choir family” there are more than 250 children aged 7-20.

We enjoy singing a variety of musical genres. These include the best of classical music, complicated pieces of modern choral music, folk music of different countries, jazz and pop music.

The choir is traditionally part of the following festivals: “Musical Spring in St.Petersburg”, the children’s musical festival "The World of Children", Easter festival and others. For more than 20 years, our young singers have been actors in the Mikhailovski Opera and Ballet House. Since 2008 were marked by work with Mariinsky theatre. We performed the 3d and the 8th Symphonies by G.Mahler, “War Requiem” by B.Britten, cantata “Carmina Burana” by K.Orf under the direction of maestro Valery Gergiev together with the theatre's orchestra, choir and soloists. In addition, the Children's choir was participant at the traditional musical festival "The Red Sea" held in Eilat (Israel) by Valery Gergiev.

Of special mention is the large number of records made by the choir which amounts to almost 20 CDs and many hours of music in the sound library at the radio of St.Petersburg.

Since the end of the 1980s our choir has participated a lot in the international festivals and competitions – in Check Republic and Germany, Holland and the UK, Spain and France, Switzerland, Belgium. Our choir has scored more than 10 highest prizes in various international festivals and competitions. Our latest achievements are the priz at competition “Harmonie Festival 2011” (Germany): 1 Prize in category “Children and Youth choirs performing folk songs”.
