On the opening of Daniil Granin’s 100th anniversary

“What a difficult thing – life, if you do it seriously – noted Daniil Granin. – I got tragic times, very historical, the main thing is that they left an intimate feeling of happiness – I’ve survived. Daniil Aleksandrovich also survived in the times that followed the tragic ones. Epochs changed, yet Granin’s lessons of conscience remained relevant. January 1st was the 100th anniversary of his birth. In December last year, the head of state signed a decree “on perpetuating the memory of the writer”. The coming year is declared the year of Granin. Its official opening took place the day before in Saint-Petersburg

He lived in this house, the window of the office on the 4th floor faced Malaya Posadskaya street. Many friends of Granin visited him here – men of literature, science, drama acting and politics. Many of them are here this time.

Eugene Burkov’s memorial plaque is adjacent to the other two – playwright Eugene Schwartz and writer Leonid Panteleev also lived in the building. This is a special place for the St Petersburg intelligentsia. The works of Daniil Granin were reprinted 8 times, 12 movies were shot based on his novels. A garden square and a library in Saint-Petersburg are named after Granin.

The opening of the memorial plaque on the house where Daniil Granin lived for more than 60 years is one of the first events dedicated to the opening of the year of Daniil Granin. An evening concert at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic followed the opening ceremony.

The Grand Philharmonic Hall is sold out. Daniil Granin was a regular at the Conservatory. He even favored a seat from which he would observe a conductor. There is a current photo exhibition in the foyer dedicated to the writer. The gala night was opened by the Chairman of the Russian Federation Assembly Council Valentina Matvienko. “Readers would always compare their thoughts with Granin’s characters. He would always be the moral authority. Mere talent was not enough at those difficult times, one had to have the civil courage and Granin surely did possess it in full measure. He was a man of honor and profound dignity” – she noted.

Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto II with the orchestra and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony were performed by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic under the baton of Mariss Jansons, Denis Matsuev at the piano. Granin’s 100th anniversary has commenced. There are more than 120 events ahead that will take place across Russia.
