Biography

Alexander Timchenko was born in Leningrad. He graduated from the Glinka Choral School of the St Petersburg State Academic Capella in 1993 and subsequently from the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire, having specialised in choral conducting and vocals. Soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers from 2001. In 2002 he made his Mariinsky Theatre debut as Lensky (Eugene Onegin). Mariinsky Opera Company soloist since 2005.

His repertoire at the Mariinsky Theatre includes: God’s Fool (Boris Godunov), Tsarevich Guidon (The Tale of Tsar Saltan), Lensky (Eugene Onegin), Chekalinsky (The Queen of Spades), the Fisherman (Le Rossignol), Oedipus (Oedipus Rex), Mephistopheles (The Fiery Angel), Smerdyakov (The Brothers Karamazov), Manilov (Dead Souls in concert), Beppe (I pagliacci), Pang (Turandot), Faust (La Damnation de Faust in concert), Gonzalve (L’Heure espagnole in concert), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Froh (Das Rheingold), the Shepherd (Tristan und Isolde), Helenus (Les Troyens), the Dance Master (Ariadne auf Naxos), Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw), Laca (Jenůfa), Albert Gregor (The Makropulos Affair).

Has toured with the Mariinsky Opera Company to Austria, the Netherlands, Japan, Finland, France and Spain (Las Palmas). In 2007 in Moscow, he took part in the Russian premiere of Rodion Shchedrin’s opera The Enchanted Wanderer. He made his international debut in 2009 as Oedipus (Oedipus Rex) at the Teatro Real in Madrid.

The singer’s discography includes recordings of Verdi’s Requiem (St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Honoured Ensemble of Russia, conducted by Yuri Temirkanov, 2009) and Stravinsky’s Les Noces (conducted by Valery Gergiev, 2010).
