Alexei MARKOV, baritone

 

Alexei Markov was born in Vyborg. Soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers (2001-2008). Soloist with the Mariinsky Theatre since 2008.

 At the Mariinsky Theatre he has performed the following roles: Don Carlo (The Stone Guest), Gryaznoi (The Tsar's Bride), Onegin (Eugene Onegin), Yeletsky and Tomsky (The Queen of Spades), Ivan (The Brothers Karamazov), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Henri Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor), Don Carlo (La forza del destino).

 Alexei Markov has given solo concerts in Finland, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, France, Austria, the USA and Turkey. He has also appeared with the Mariinsky Opera Company in Rotterdam (Netherlands), at the Deutsche Oper (Germany), the Mikkeli Festival (Finland), the Lincoln Center (New York), the Barbican Hall (London).

From 2006-2008 Alexei Markov performed as a guest soloist with the Oper Frankfurt (The Queen of Spades, Tosca), Dresden's Semperoper (Otello) and the opera house in Graz in Austria (Un ballo in maschera).

In the 2007-2008 season he made his Metropolitan Opera debut (New York) as Andrei Bolkonsky (War and Peace); in the 2008-2009 season he has already appeared as Eugene Onegin at the La Coruna festival (Spain) and as Gryaznoi (The Tsar's Bride) at Carnegie Hall (with the New York Symphony Orchestra).

Prize-winner at the International Lisitsian Competition (Vladikavkaz, 2003), VI International Rimsky-Korsakov Young Opera Singer's Competition (St Petersburg, 2004), I All-Union Nadezhda Obukhova Competition (Lipetsk, 2005), IV International Elena Obraztsova Young Opera Singers' Competition (St Petersburg, 2005), International Competizione dell' Opera (Dresden, 2006, 2nd prize), International Moniuszko Competition (Warsaw, 2007, 1st prize).
