Vita KALNCIEMA, organ (Latvia)

Latvian Organ player Vita Kalnciema was born in Riga. She started attending piano classes at the age of six. She received her professional education at Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of music, where she graduated from the piano section in 1983 and from the organ section in 1985. Vita Kalnciema then continued her education taking part at numerous master-classes with world-renowned organ players.

Vita Kalnciema has participated and collected prices from various international competitions: in Ukraine (1989), Poland (1989), Switzerland (1994), C.Franck competition in Haarlem, the Netherlands (1994). She is engaged in regular concert activities in Europe, U.S.A., Canada and has recorded a number of LPs under the series „Historic Organs in Latvia”, as well as audiovisual material for the archives of Latvian radio and television.

Vita Kalnciema is a concert organist, head of the organ class and professor at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music, teaches also at Riga Cathedral choir school and plays organ for the Parish of Jesus in Riga. She has inspired, and now runs, the Latvian Guild of organists.

Latvian organ music has always played an important part in Vita Kalnciema’s repertoire. In 2001 when Riga celebrated its 800th Anniversary, she started the „Golden Treasury of Latvian Organ Music” series of concerts planned for several seasons. The title of some CD of V.Kalnciema is also borrowed from this series.

Now Vita Kalnciema plays the series of several concerts “The Breath of Europe”.

In May 2009 Vita Kalnciema presented a beautiful concert at the Riga Cathedral in honour of a major anniversary in her life and her career.
